Understanding Dutch culture: the Judeo-Christian heritage

Singel Lecture: 10 december 2019

Time: 8.00 - 9.30 p.m.

Location: Singelkerk, Wittevrouwensingel 28, Utrecht

Although many Dutch consider themselves very liberal and non-religious, the Dutch culture is heavily influenced by Christian values. An interesting question is what is there still to see from this influence in the rather secular society of the Netherlands. Is it not more close to reality to speak about a humanistic heritage?
And even paradoxically: is this secular-liberal society not also a product of Christianity? In this lecture, we will delve into the foundations of Dutch culture in relation to religion. This exercise will also give you some better grip on understanding those strange Dutchies.

Prof. dr. James Kennedy is Dean of the University College, a professor in Contemporary History and wrote for instance in 2017 the book A Concise History of the Netherlands.
